Taking responsibility for the impact of how we work
Professional services may not manufacture physical products, but they still have an environmental footprint. Office operations, technology, business travel and journeys undertaken by Associates all create emissions that should be recognised and addressed.
Our approach is straightforward: reduce avoidable impact wherever practicable, measure the emissions within our defined scope and take responsible action in relation to those that cannot yet be eliminated.
Since April 2020, Exceptional People has worked through the World Land Trust’s Carbon Balanced programme to address emissions associated with our operations. In fact we have been paying twice the the amount we are assessed to pay each year. This means that, in 2026, we will also have covered emissions dating back to our inception in 2014.
The World Land Trust programme supports the protection and restoration of threatened forests that store carbon, safeguard biodiversity and provide benefits for local communities. World Land Trust applies recognised standards, monitoring and verification, with carbon credits retired through a public registry.
We do not regard carbon balancing as a substitute for reducing emissions. It forms one part of a wider responsibility to understand our impact, avoid unnecessary emissions and support credible environmental action in relation to the residual footprint. As working practices, travel patterns and environmental standards evolve, our approach will evolve with them. We are committed to reviewing the scope of our calculations and communicating our actions clearly, specifically and without exaggeration.
Our objective is not to make the broadest possible environmental claim. It is to take proportionate, measurable action and remain accountable for the impact associated with how we work.
